Museum Showcases![]()
Most people have been to museums and have had the wonderful opportunity to learn about anything and everything historic. Unfortunately, people are inquisitive beings and touching everything that interests us is nothing but pure nature! Museums have artifacts that are thousands and some millions of years old, a single human touch could cause the item to break apart and then a piece of history is lost forever. Artifacts are therefore displayed in museum showcases, as most will know; these come in enormously large sizes to those that are small and petite.
Museum showcases need to be excessively hard, in such a sense that under no circumstances may they break. The reason for this is that natural disasters of minimal proportion can cause excessive damage; a properly structured showcase can however prevent detrimental damage. Many museum showcases covers’ are made from acrylic. Acrylic is an extremely hard from of plastic and it is typically used where glass is not practical. Acrylic does however look just as beautiful as glass and is able to provide the same security to the items it holds. Acrylic can also be touched repeatedly without any damage, and for a museum showcase, this is an absolute necessity. An advantage of acrylic used for museum showcases are that the showcase will be light and easy to handle should it need to be moved and because of its flexibility stands very little chance of breaking. Nothing however is completely break resistant, the breaking of acrylic is safer than the breaking of glass, glass would simply shatter, and acrylic however would break into large fragments. Museum showcases need to be sealed thoroughly to prevent any dirt, dust and air from entering, this would ensure that the items they contain remain in excellent condition.
More traditional museum showcases are those made of glass. The glass cover is extremely thick; this makes it strong and prevents it from breaking. Disadvantages of glass museum showcases are that they can crack easily, even from a small occurrence. Years of display can result in the glass becoming more resilient to damage, and because not all people see the ‘do not touch’ sign it is sometimes difficult to maintain glass in good condition. An advantage of glass is however, that it does look elegant, stylish and brings forth beauty in all that it displays. The choice for museum showcases should therefore depend on such factors as, how often people will be close to the showcase, if people will be able to touch the cover of the showcase and how safe the showcase is in the place it is positioned. Both acrylic and glass make fantastic covers for museum showcases, in the end, the cover that is the most beneficial for the artifacts it holds should be chosen.
